SYNOD SUNDAY 2020 THEME
Doing what is Beautiful and Profitable Amidst the Pandemic
By Rev Keith Lai
Jul 2020

Darkness and gloom. This feeling seems to permeate everyone's life during this period of COVID-19 pandemic. Disruption most severe, and in every form and sphere of human influence and activity. This prolonged season of unparalleled challenges and major upheavals leave many of us feeling uncertain, lost and anxious. The world that we grew up with is forever changed. And so too is our lives...or is it?

For God's people, there are somethings that will never change.

Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. As His followers there are somethings that remain the same. One of the unchanging characteristics of Christ's disciples is that they continue to bear good fruits. A Christ-centred and living faith always produce good fruits and works...consistently.

Titus spells this out clearly, "I want you to especially emphasize [g] these truths, so that those who believe in God will be careful to devote themselves to doing good works. It is always beautiful and profitable for believers to do good works." (Titus 3:8. The Passion Translation: TPT).

The Church of Jesus Christ throughout history has proven this axiom over and over again. John Stott's "Issues facing Christians Today" (4th Edition), made this remarkable observation of the Church, "...Evangelicals have a remarkable history in terms of their commitment to social and economic justice, not least in the 18th century Europe and America. The Evangelical Revival, which stirred both continents, should not be thought of only in terms of preaching the Gospel and the converting of sinners to Christ; it also led to widespread philanthropy, and profoundly affected society of both sides of the Atlantic".

When in its darkest, God's people shines even brighter. This is what makes them "beautiful and profitable". The whole world is watching these beautiful demonstrations of Christ's love. This is why Titus (3:14) goes on to urge us to be passionate in reaching out to others:

"Encourage the believers to be passionately devoted to beautiful works of righteousness by meeting the urgent needs of others and not be unfruitful."

Our government is facing a mammoth task of dealing with the concerns and needs of the many in dire straits posed by the current pandemic. Their struggles with issues include social relationship, health, finance and an uncertain future.

Despite the challenges, we see the Church once again rise to the opportunity to help meet and alleviate those needs as best as possible. On this SYNOD Sunday, we want to focus on what the different PCS churches are doing to impact our society for Christ. May we be encouraged to press on with our good works. May we truly be the Church without walls, warmly and lovingly inviting all people into the love of God the Father in Jesus Christ. This is what makes us beautiful and profitable as God's people, especially during this trying and difficult times. And may His grace be sufficient for us in all our endeavours.
